ANIMATION

Here is a link to the student animations that I have helped to create: https://vimeo.com/user6491534/videos
I was originally inspired to begin the animation program at our school because a local artist named Aaron Zenz approached me and asked if I knew of Winsor McCay. I had never heard of the artist and was surprised to learn that not only had he invented animation as we know it, but he grew up in our own little town of Spring Lake! This sent me on a journey to discover all I could about the eccentric and innovative Winsor McCay.
I decided to pursue an animation program at our school using the simplest type of animation: stop motion. In order to do this, I needed the basic equipment: cameras, copy stands and a computer with software able to compile and edit images. Fortunately, I was able to procure a grant through the Carol Martin fund. I am now in my 3rd year of creating animations with my students. The animations on the Vimeo link above are some examples of student work.
My goal in creating these works with the students is to reinforce the role of art in sharing ideas. Numerous groups were asked to create a work that described one of the laws of matter, another to demonstrate friction, and another to show what happens to water when it freezes. These topics help to reinforce the strong relationship that art can have with science, math, literacy and any other subject. Each of us can learn more when it's shown to us in an easy to understand way....like an animation.
